Keep It Ninja

Keep it NinjaKeep it NinjaShawnimals creator Shawn Smith has created a variety of new Ninjatown-inspired works for his My Plastic Heart art exhibition in December including never-before-seen fabric collages. These multi-layered wall-based felt constructions will involve the same style of imagery and illustration Shawn has become known for, except in a form somewhere between sculpture and painting, similar to relief. These new works will be accompanied by smaller painted panels, and two all-new handmade special edition plush – Pocket Zombie Ninja and Super Ninja – available in limited quantities which Shawn created alongside creative collaborator Jen Brody and the Shawnimals staff.

In addition, an exclusive Keep it Ninja exhibition t-shirt will be available and the all-new Ninjatown Micro Plush blind box series from Squibbles / Rotofugi. Other Shawnimals merchandise will be available as well, like shirts, buttons, stickers, and, of course, plush.

Bad Ass Bears

Bax Bear Release PartyI got e-mail from Jason over at Bax Bear the other day letting me know about the release of their new figure. The Bax Bears will be released into the wild this Saturday, November 10th at El Kartel in Vancouver, BC. The release party will run from 9pm until midnight. There will be over 100 hand-painted 8-inch bears and 500 secret gifts available. There is also a super-limited gold-plated Bax Bear chase figure somewhere out there to lust over. These little bears remind me a lot of Qee bears, but with different ears and an articulated waist. You can find out more information about Bax Bears on their blog. Also, check out the additional pictures below.Bax BearsBax BearsBax Bears

You Want It MF?! You Got It!!!

I just got e-mail from Michael over at Wootini, who I have missed getting e-mails from over the last couple of months, letting me know that they will be having a new show going up tonight, Friday, October 12th at 7:00pm. The show is by artists Martina and Frank Russo of MF Gallery in New York City. New York City?! It must be good! The show will run through November 6th. Here's the press release from Wootini:
Martina Secondo Russo and Frank Russo of MF Gallery in Manhattan, NY are bringing down a visual onslaught of art that is sure to horrify the weak and tickle the fancies of the bold. If you're a fan of Zombies, Monsters, GWAR, Metal, Sideshow Freaks or Horror Flicks, know this: these two are the East Coast's masters. They have endlessly and successfully shown some of the best art having anything to do with the pulp-monster universe that your fangs so fiercely crave.
Sounds perfect for this time of year, what with Halloween quickly creeping up ("quickly creeping", is that an oxymoron?). "Family" will be providing the deep grooves and there will be treats, as usual. I will be there in my scariest Halloween costume: my own face!!!

A Little Bit Of Hoop Da' Hoop

Little Who of WhatAnd a little bit of who of what. Wootini, my favorite local Limited Ed. toy store and gallery, will be hosting the Little Friends of Printmaking's latest exhibit, Little Who of What, starting today, June 8th, and running through July 8th. The opening reception will be held tonight starting at 7pm. There will be refreshments and "Family" will be on hand to lay down some laid-back tracks.
The Little Friends of Printmaking are J W & Melissa Buchanan, a husband-and-wife team of artists & designers based out of Milwaukee, WI. Originally trained as fine art printmakers, their dalliance in silkscreened concert posters quickly turned into a design career. In 2006, they received the Young Guns award from the Art Directors' Club, honoring the world's finest emerging creatives under 30. Their work has been exhibited internationally, and they have been published in the recent books New Masters of Poster Design [Rockport], Two-Faced: The Changing Face of Portaiture [iDN], and Beasts! [Fantagraphics].

Sherpa Sherpa

Sherpa Mellow release partySherpa Sherpa Sherpa. Say the word a few times and it starts to lose its meaning. Kinda' like elbow or truncheon. They just become marbles in your mouth. What is a truncheon, anyway? Alright, now that I'm done with my etymology lesson for the day, I got e-mail from Pink Ghost today (actually, last night) letting me know that Chris Lee will be in the house to sign his Limited Ed. flocked "Sherpa" Mellow on Saturday, June 30th beginning at 8pm. The first 25 people to show up and purchase a Sherpa Mellow will receive a free signed and numbered mini art print. Only 180 Sherpa Mellows were produced and they will run ya' about ninety bucks. There will be music, a raffle and free coffee and cupcakes available at the signing, so even if you don't get a Sherpa Mellow, there will be plenty of other stuff to enjoy. If only I lived in Florida, I would attend this event (actually, I would probably kill myself. I hate Florida).

My Elbee Bone Done Brokeded!

Machine Works: Elbow GreaseMy Plastic Heart and ShutterKICK Productions will be hosting toy customizer Rohby's first solo show in NYC: Machine Works: Elbow Grease featuring Rohby's new custom Munny Mechas at war as four rogue armies battle it out for world supremacy. Each army consists of two mechs decked out in their own unique designs and color schemes (I especially like the red, black and white color scheme of the mechs on the postcard, it matches my blog). If you're a fan of Munnies and Mechs this is one show that cannot be missed!

An aspiring Industrial Designer, Rohby scratch-builds all of his customs out of hand-cast resin. Every attendee at the opening reception will have a chance to win one of two Custom Munny Pilots handmade by Rohby exclusively for the show! Elbow Grease will run from June 9th through July 15th with an opening reception on June 8th, from 6-9pm at the My Plastic Heart toy store & gallery. Custom Munny Mechas will be available for sale at the show and afterwards online at here.

Bitter Sweets

Ryan Myers Bitter SweetsRyan Myers and PinkGhost would like to invite you to Bitter Sweets: Ryan Myers Solo Art Show Opening at PinkGhost.
Rain on parades, dropped ice cream cones; life has a way of balancing the good and the bad. Bitter Sweets: a solo show by Ryan Myers at PinkGhost in Ft. Lauderdale pits the bitter versus the sweet. Full of leering stares from disenchanted children, looming conversation hearts and other disastrous confections, this new series brings images of all-consuming melancholy to its paintings and custom vinyl toys. What better to explore the dichotomy of bitter/sweet than a candy land where contempt and loathing are disguised in cotton candy pinks and gumdrop greens.
Ryan Myers is a New York artist. His works have been included in various shows across the country. An opening reception for Bitter Sweets with the artist in attendance will be held on April 14th at 8pm with free coffee and cupcakes, awesome DJs and amazing artwork. Check out his figural work below.

Cross Contour Crazy!

Dave Flores at project: galleryI remember back in art school when we did cross contour drawing. It was in one of those Drawing 101 classes that I hated so much because the professors treated us like kindergarteners. If they would have let me skip all of those basic drawing classes, I would have been much better off and would have enjoyed art school a lot more. I had been taking art classes since birth, I knew how to draw already. Well, apparently someone was paying attention in those Drawing 101 classes. And that person is Dave Flores, who will be having an exhibit opening this Saturday, March 10th, at project: gallery in Los Angeles from 7-11pm. I have appreciated Mr. Flores' work since I first saw it on his first toy, the Kon Artis figure. I also like his gold and silver Dunnys. David Flores is known for his cross contour drawings of famous people and cartoon icons. He has definitely taken advantage of that art school education. I'm jealous.
