Smurfin' Hell!

I know this has nothing to do with anything, but my sister works for UNICEF so this really made me laugh. It looks like UNICEF is making some news with their new horrific Smurf-killing ad-campaign on Belgian television:

The appeal is meant to raise money for UNICEF projects in Burundi, Congo and Sudan, [UNICEF Belgium spokesman Philippe] Henon said. However, due to its graphic and disturbing scenes, this cartoon is not for everyone. The advertisement is aimed at an adult audience and is only shown after 9 p.m. to avoid upsetting young Smurfs fans.

What about old Smurfs fans like myself? I used to have the entire collection. Poor, dead Smurfette.

It's a shirt with a magnet in it so that you can attach your iPod Shuffle to it and look super-cool! Okay, maybe super-dorky is a more precise description of how you will look wearing this shirt. At least this will keep the Shuffle from bouncing against your sternum when you jog, like it tends to do with a neck lanyard. Apparently this shirt is no good for people with pacemakers due to the magnet that is embedded in it. Well that leaves me out. Stupid, non-functioning heart. I guess I shouldn't have done all of that meth in the 80's.

Speaking of flying, Ningyoushi has an accessory that would help out in creating the perfect Halloween costume, if you are rich. And I don't mean you, Rich, although I'm sure you could probably afford it. But maybe not with your trip to Hawaii this week. Anyway, now that I have digressed much further than I expected, here's the item I was talking about. It's the Limited Ed. helmet from the Disney film The Rocketeer:



I can just imagine flying around Southern California on a stolen jetpack with this thing strapped to my head. If you can afford the $450.⁰⁰ for this thing than you can probably also afford the rest of the outfit. The jetpack might be a little hard to come by, though. Unfortunately, the helmet won't be shipping until November or December, which is too late to be useful for Halloween. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to dress up as G.I. Jew again. Or Ron Jeremy again. Whichever one will get me laid quicker.

Sympathy For The Devil

Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long, long year, stole many a man's soul and faith.

I was around on Saturday night, October 8^th, when the Rolling Stones held their concert at Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University. What an amazing show! It was definitely in the top five concerts that I have been to, and I have been to about a thousand concerts. It was right up there with Willie Nelson at the North Carolina State Fair in 2000, Dylan and the Dead at RFK in 1995, Pink Floyd at Carter-Finley in 1994, and R.E.M. at the Smith Center in 1989. My girlfriend and I had great seats for the show, right next to the stage on the left in the first row of the stadium. My dad was right when he said they played all of the songs he wanted to hear. Before the show, we were talking about which songs we wanted to hear and he mentioned Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, You Can't Always Get What You Want, and Honky-Tonk Woman, and they played all of them. They also did a great cover version of Ray Charles' Night Time is the Right Time and played one of my all-time favorites, Dead Flowers. Here is the complete set list. Of course, because they were playing at Duke, they had to do a brilliant version of Sympathy for the Devil. The whole thing was just spectacular. The show was so good, my girlfriend even bought a Limited Ed. "Stones Duke Sympathy for the Devil" t-shirt, even though she is a UNC student and hates Duke with a passion. The shirts were only available at the Duke concert and once they were sold out, they were gone. I'll post a cute picture of her wearing it as soon as I upload it to the good ol' internet. All in all, even with the slight drizzle, it was an amazing night.

Update: They just put the Duke concert shirts up for sale on the Stones website. I guess they weren't just available at the show. Oh well, now everyone can get one and I don't feel as special. Here's the link and a pic:

Lazy Friday

I am being lazy today because it is Friday, so I will just reiterate a post that Evan Orensten made over at Cool Hunting. It's about the Throw Yo:

When I was in junior high school, carrying yo-yo's was extremely popular. And Duncan Butterfly yo-yo's were the best because you could do tricks easier with them. I showed my girlfriend some yo-yo tricks the other night and boy was she impressed! Apparently all of the cool yo-yo's nowadays are coming from Buzz-on Industries. They even have Limited Ed. yo-yo's:

My brother has just started a blog along the same lines as Zach Braff's Garden State blog! It's called The Cool Season after his movie of the same name. It should be interesting reading the daily behind-the-scenes of a first-time director trying to complete his first feature film and get it out to the world. Plus, pictures of cute Thai girls!

The big rumor on the internet yesterday and today was about the possible release of a video iPod next week. Here's the dish that Engadget cooked up, along with a fine pic:



Looks like they have some new news today. Apparently, Apple will announce updates to the Power Mac and PowerBook next week, and that picture is probably Photochopped®. Well as soon as they make a video iPod I will be the first in line at my local Apple Store to buy one.

Fall Bounce

I went to a roller disco party (possibly inspired by the new movie Roll Bounce) at Skate World in Kernersville, North Cackalacka for my friend Scherrie's birthday yesterday and boy is my ass tired! I only fell twice (trying to show off for my girlfriend), which isn't too bad, but it has been a few years since the last time I went roller skating and I am paying for it today. My legs feel like rubber, it's painful sitting down and I lost my voice singing along to all the classic roller disco music that was played. When I was a kid there was a roller rink about a mile from my house, so my friends and I would go there two or three days a week during the summer to hang out, skate and play video games. Scherrie's party really took me back. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. This was also the first time I have ever had someone to skate with during the couples skate, which was really exciting for me. Everyone was dressed appropriately for the event, as well. If Ryan sends me some pictures, I'll post them here so y'all can see what I mean. Anyway, here are some vintage skates to look at in the meantime. I like these fancy Riedell 65S vintage roller skates:



Apparently these skates are, "lost inventory from the 70's! These are original outdoor super suede 65s boots from back in the day. HAND STITCHED! These are not made nor will ever be made again. Great for speed outdoor skating and/or special events." I like how the stripes make them look like they are going fast even when they are standing still. Also, check out these pretty in pink, faux-Reebok-lookin' Riedell Aerobiskate vintage roller skates:



Why aerobicize when you can aerobiskate? Unfortunately, since these skates are deadstock, there aren't very many sizes available and they are pretty expensive. If everyone at the party had thrown in ten bucks, we could have gotten a pair for Scherrie for her birthday and then she wouldn't have ever had to take off her skates. Now I'm going to go ice my bruises and take some aspirin. I'm getting too old for this shit.
